Description |
This postcard looks south on Biddle Avenue (or South 3rd Street) from Biddle Island and shows spectators viewing damage to houses, power lines, and the Wabash River 3rd Street Bridge. Within a couple of days the flood, which started on Easter Sunday, March 23, 1913, damaged both bridges to Biddles Island, a small island in the Wabash River near the confluence of the Eel River. According to bridgehunter.com, after the flood the iron Interurban bridge to the east remained, but the wagon or road bridge was washed off the stone piers. Both bridges were rebuilt. The brick Second-Empire style house to the left was located on the southeast corner of Biddle Avenue and Gate Streets. |
