Description |
A family poses in front of a two-story frame house with a wrap-around porch with concrete posts. A note on the price tag stated that was taken in Markle, Indiana. This is probably John and Eliza Bender with their single daughters, Della J., Nettie (later Wilson), and Maud (later Brickley), who is listed with them in the 1910 census. John Henry Bender (1840-1918) was a farmer and stockraiser who lived in Rockcreek Township, Wells County. He married Eliza Raber/Raver in 1870. His parents bought this farm in 1852 and John purchased it in 1881. (Source: Biographical and Historical Record of Adams and Wells Counties, Indiana, 1887, p. 983) His obituary stated that he lived near St. Paul Church. Based on the 1901 Map of Wells County, Indiana, this house was located on what was then the Bender Gravel Road in the west 1/2 of the southwest 1/4 of section 13 in Rockcreek Township. The house no longer stands on that land, which later had a Bluffton address. |
