Description |
This circa 1874 stereographic view by photographers Salter and Judd shows men with American Express Company wagons. The pose in front of buildings on the north side of East Washington Street located between Meridian and Pennsylvania Streets. Buildings visible from the left: 1. Fowler's Mammoth Art Studio and Photographic Hall (24-26 East Washington) located above a book and wallpaper store. Photographer Harry Fowler occupied this site for over 17 years. The bookstore was owned by Robert W. Cathcart and John E. Cleland. Other businesses in the building included a law office 2. Fletcher's Bank (30 East Washington), a stone-front building constructed on this site in the 1850s by Stoughton A. Fletcher Sr. In 1888 it expanded to the east and doubled in size. 3. Three-story brick building with that housed I. L. Frankem's Stoves and Furnishings from 1868 until 1888. The upper floor housed Photographic Rooms, Ingraham's Gallery at 32 1/2 East Washington operated by Charles B. Ingraham, who advertised 4 gems for 50 cents. Note the slanted skylight and Frankem mural facing the alley. 4. Partially visible to the right is a four-story brick building that housed the music store of Henry L. Benham. |
