Description |
Typed on verso: "Crows Nest. The Country Home of the Hoosier Motor Club, Indianapolis, Indiana. 7-1/2 miles from the Monument. On White river. Outdoor swimming pool, good fishing, dancing pavillion and camping ground." This photo appeared in the Indianapolis News, April 2, 1914, p. 11 along with an article explaining that directors had completed arrangments for this club. Land was purchased by members Russell Seeds and John B. Cockrum and leased to the club. It announced a dining room and a future dancing pavilion to be erected on the grounds. The property, with a tennis court, swimming pool, terraced driveways and graded lawns, included a house, barn, and cottage. The two-story ash log house had a porch overlooking the river, servants quarters, baths and locker rooms, a dining room, and bedrooms on the upper level. It had been developed by the late George A. Dickson and later owned by Charles A. Sudlow, with the log house completed in 1903 and only occupied by Dickson a month before his death. (Indianapolis Star, October 24, 1904). Newspapers report that club director's terminated the lease on July 1, 1914 due to a dispute with Seeds, who failed to live up to the terms of the lease. Seeds then incorporated the Crow's Nest Motor Club which operated through 1915. In May 1916 the Crow's Nest Motor Club no longer used the clubhouse and the owners Russell M. Seeds and the Sudlow estate leased the land to Seymour Avery. |
