Title |
Glenn Nelson and classmate at the Tank, West Lafayette, Indiana, 1913 |
Catalog Number |
ia-0001-c048-0056 |
Description |
Glenn Nelson (right) and friend pose in front of the tank after the last Tank Scrap in 1913. Painted on the tank is a large "17" for the Class of 1917. The water tower is better known as "The Tank." The "Tank Scrap" tradition began in 1894 with the class of 1897 painting the newly finished tower on the southern edge of the Grand View Cemetery on North Salisbury Street. The event was a freshman-sophomore rivalry that ended in 1913 due to violence. The basis of the tradition was that the Freshman and Sophomore classes would fight to paint their class year on the tank. The students, faculty, and adminstration voted unanimously to end the event after the death of student Fancis Walter Obenchain in 1913. Glenn Nelson's class (Class of 1917) was the last class to paint the tower in 1913. The tower still stands in 2020 next to the caretaker's house and surrounded by a security fence topped with barbed wire. |
