Handwritten on the slide frame is "Ground bkg - School Bd. Bldg. - Ed. Center." In the background, Central Christian Church is seen on the right in front of Riley Towers Apartments. L to R: Col. L. R. Mottern (building and grounds committee chair), Mrs. Gertrude Page, Ortha L. Scales, Mrs. Ralph (nee Alice Marie Wooling) Coble, Richard G. Lugar, Superintendant George F. Ostheimer, and Harry A. McGuff. According to the Indianapolis Star, construction began on the new Indianapolis Public School Education Center at 120 E. Walnut Street on on May 4, 1965. It was built on the former site of the Benjamin Harrison School No. 2. Officials dig into the ground on the northwest corner of Delaware and Walnut Streets at the groundbreaking ceremony. Richard G. Lugar, 3rd from the right, served on the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners between 1964 and 1967 (when he was elected mayor of Indianapolis). Visible in the background is the Central Christian Church in front of Riley Towers Apartments. The Weaver Apartments are seen to the left. The building was renamed the Dr. John Morton-Finney Center for Educational Services in honor of an African-American teacher at Crispus Attucks High School. |
