Description |
Postmarked July 5, 1911. Birds'-eye view of businesses near Mills Memorial Fountain, one of four fountains on Main Street funded by Brigadier General Anson Mills in honor of his parents. This view looks north on North Market Street from the West Main Street intersection. The First Methodist Episcopal Church is in the distance. This 32-foot fountain with two bowls and a large basin was surrounded by a metal fence with street lights. It stood from 1909 until 1944, when plans for State Road 47 (along Main Street), led to the removal of the fountain. It is assumed that it was melted down and one source states it was sacrificed as part of World War II's scrap drive. The head was later in the collection of the Thorntown Heritage Museum. In 2007 the Thorntown Public Library commissioned a replica of part of the fountain from the original plans. "Helen at the Well" is at the entrance to the library. |
