Description |
Whole plate tintype depicting men posing in front of the W. J. Allen Hardware, Stoves & Tinware business. The brick Italianate building has an address of "9," although the number above the door to the right is "326." Signs visible include "Kelly Steel Barb Wire," "Go To Allen's For Tin-Ware" (painted on a large coffee pot-shaped sign), and a "Third Ward Convention" handbill. A man wearing an apron and holding tinsnips appears in a 2nd floor window. Merchandise visible includes tin cans and pots, a cider press, and stoves. William John Allen (1836-1915) operated a hardware on the south side of the Monroe County Courthouse Square for about 40 years. The original tintype is laterally reversed, as was standard for the tintype process. Also included in this catalog record is a digitally flipped image for easier readability. |
