Description |
Vignetted bust portrait of a woman wearing a snood (hairnet). Based on other photographs in the collection, she has been identified as Rachel (Way) Swain (1835-1919). She was born a birthright Quaker in Randolph County, Indiana to parents Anthony Way and Rhoda Lane. On October 27, 1860 she married Theron Swain (1834-1869) in Wayne County, Indiana. She became a doctor and operated a home sanatarium in Indianapolis from the 1880s until about 1910. Another print from this negative (image ia-0551-album2-0006) is marked by Swain Brothers, Indianapolis. |
