Description |
Young uniformed women play basketball on a grass and dirt outdoor court with a backboard-less basketball hoop. Spectators stand near a the brick Shortridge High School to the right and houses are across the street. Handwritten on back: "Basket Ball / I.H.S. vs. Y.W.C.A. / Apr. 22, 1899." Indianapolis High School, located at the northeast corner of North Pennsylvania and East Michigan Streets, had recently been renamed Shortridge High School. This view looks south from the lot east of the school (before building No. 3 was built). The brick double across the street at 113-115 (later 115-117) East Michigan Street was designed by architect John G. Thurtle. [Sources: Indianapolis News, April 13, 1894 and Sanborn maps.] |
