Description |
The site of the Historic Steer-In Restaurant at 5130 E. 10th Street originally started as a stucco-clad frozen custard stand in the 1930s. Owners Harrison R. "Ray" and Helen Northway changed the name to Northway's Drive-In by 1941. They offered sandwiches, fountain drinks, and ice cream. Since this was a seasonal business, the restaurant closed in the cold months but former customers recall that Christmas trees were sold in the parking lot in December. In the late 1950s the Laughners bought the site, built a modern dine-in and drive-up restaurant, and the place has been known as the Steer-In ever since. Jim and his brother Ralph resided in the Emerson Heights Neighborhood at 862 North Bosart Avenue with their parents and siblings. Scanned for the Near Eastside Community Organization (NESCO), the collection depicts houses and busnesses on the near Eastside of Indianapolis. |
