A taped cloth strip affixed to the back reads "Othneil Beeson." Beeson, a senator from Wayne County, Indiana, appears in the 3rd row from the top, 3rd man from the right. James D. "Blue Jeans Bill" Williams is to the far left in the 2nd row from the top.

Vignetted bust portrait of a woman wearing a snood (hairnet). Based on other photographs in the collection, she has been identified as Rachel (Way) Swain (1835-1919). She was born a birthright Quaker in Randolph County, Indiana to parents Anthony Way and Rhoda Lane. On October 27, 1860 she married Theron Swain (1834-1869) in Wayne County, Indiana. She became a doctor and operated a home sanatarium in Indianapolis from the 1880s until about 1910.

Based on his similar appearance to Theron Swain, this is probably one of Theron's two brothers: Rufus Swain (1830-1868, a photograph partner of Theron) or Remus M. Swain (1839-1919).
