Candid photograph of several young women in front of an older wood frame house with a long front porch and picket fence Two bicycles are parked in the front yard. Handwritten on the back is "Old YWCA." In March 1898 the Indianapolis Young Women's Christian Association bought and moved into this house, the Conde property, at 231 North Meridian St. [old address 131 North Meridian] and updated it to include a gymnasium, dining hall, offices, reception hall, and a transient room for young women coming into the city late at night with no place to go. The city's large number of young working women kept the Y. W. C. A. busy and they offered lunches for 10 to 25 cents, sometimes serving over 200 women per day. Physical instruction with swinging ladders, horses, and parallel bars was offered in the gym. Night classes included art, cooking and sewing, bible study, US history, literature, German, and French. Newspapers mentioned boating and bicycling clubs. The land was needed for the new Federal Post Office and Courthouse, so the house was razed in the early 1900s for that project.
