Title |
Four people in studio with framed portrait, Richmond, Indiana, circa 1865 |
Catalog Number |
ia-0551-album1-0042 |
Description |
Four people pose in front of a painted backdrop with an oval framed portrait of an older woman resting on a table. Based on other photographs in the album, the seated man to the right is Theron Swain (1834-1869). Portraits of the other man are in the album, and due to his similar appearance is probably one of Theron's two brothers: Rufus Swain (1830-1868, a photograph partner of Theron) or Remus M. Swain (1839-1919). Neither women are Theron's wife Rachel, and might be Swain sisters: Aurelia Maxwell (1828-1872, wife of the studio photographer Samuel Maxwell), Musidora Huddleston (1832-1916), Teresa Maria Sanford (1836-1916), or Jerusha Maxwell (1842-1918). The seven Swain siblings were birthright Quakers born near Lotus in Union County, Indiana to Jonathan Swain and Eunice Gardner. Theron and his brother Rufus Swain operated Swain Brothers photograph gallery in Indianapolis in the mid-to-late 1860s. |
