Title |
Franklin P. Nelson house, Greencastle, Indiana, circa 1875 |
Catalog Number |
ia-0001-0245 |
Description |
Faded albumen stereoview of a brick and limestone Second Empire house. Printed on the front of the green mount is "Published by Salter & Judd / 45 East Washington Street, Indianapolis" and handwritten on the back: "No 411 Residence of F. P. Nelson." The Greencastle Banner, Thursday, March 11, 1875, p. 7 printed a small notice stating that "Salter & Judd, of Indianapolis, were in town yesterday getting stereoscopic views of the ruins" [of the downtown fire], so this was possibly made at that time. The house, known as The Towers, was constructed in the early 1870s by wealthy farmer, banker, and industrialist Franklin P. Nelson and his second wife Eliza J. Brannan in 1873. After Nelson's death in 1896, his family sold the house to DePauw University and it served as a home for presidents and as a reception hall. By 1932 it was a fraternity house and was later rented as apartments. It was listed on the National Register in 1980 and still stands as of 2019. Both towers have been removed.
