"Memories of the Art Institute girls and Knickerbocker [sic Knickerbacker] Lodge, 1541 Central Ave, Indianapolis, Indiana." Four of the snapshots depict women in front of the brick Knickerbocker [Knickerbacker] Lodge, a former girls' school operated by the Episcopal Church of Indiana as a low-cost boarding house for young women of any denomination who are employed or are students. From a photograph album compiled by Randolph County native Mildred Ruth (Rickert) Lowell (1906-1988). She documented her friends at John Herron Art Institute in 1927; Indiana University, where she graduated with a AB in Fine Arts in 1928; and at her first teaching job in Lafayette. She continued teaching after she married Harvey Matthew Lowell in Michigan in 1932 and went on to receive a MA in Art Education from the University of Michigan in 1945. |
