Description |
This lantern slide has a handwritten label "Polish children at the Entrance of two Community Houses, Gary, Indiana." Gary was founded in 1906 and named for Elbert H. Gary, chairman of the board of U.S. Steel. Many Southern and Eastern European immigrants came to the area and assimilated to American society in settlement houses. This image may show the Neighborhood House, Gary's first settlement house. It was founded by the Indiana Presbyterian Synod and the Home Mission Committee in 1909 and operated until 1973. Other settlement houses that formed by World War I include the Campbell House and Friendship House. |
