Description |
View looking southwest at the intersection of South Meridian and West Georgia Streets in the Wholesale District. The four-story stone-front commercial building was constructed in 1865 by Elijah S. Alvord and designed by architect Isaac Hodgson. At the time this photograph was taken by Salter and Judd, the four storefronts were occupied by, from right to left (with old addresses): 108 South Meridian - McKee and Branham boots and shoes 110 South Meridian - Kimble, Aikman and Company, wholesale hardware 112 South Meridian - Rickard, Kirby and Company, hats 114 South Meridian - John C. Burton and Company, boots and shoes These merchants were all at those addresses in 1873 and 1874 Indianapolis city directories. The building was destroyed by a large fire on South Meridian Street on January 13, 1888. Today the land is occupied by the McKee Building, constructed on the corner in 1888-1889 (202-204 South Meridian) and the D. P. Erwin Building built in 1889-1890 (206-214 South Meridian). They have housed The Old Spaghetti Factory since 1982. McKee purchased the corner lot and began constructing a new building the same year. D. P. Erwin |
