Lithograph of buildings on the south side of West Washington Street. From left to right: 17-19 West Washington Street - Albert Gall block, home furnishings store 21 West Washington Street - Wm. B. Burford steam printing, lithographing, and blank books 23 West Washington Street - Danbury Hat Company 25 West Washington Street - Camplin and Von Hake Alligator Shoe Store and Gun Wa's Chinese Herb and Vegetable Remedies 27 West Washington Street - L. Siers?erfer Signs on the upper floors of Gun Wa's business read "Chinese Vegetable Herb Remedies, are cheap in price, harmless & sure to cure / Read Gun Wa's life and testimonials / no charge for consultation or advice" and "Gun Wa's Chinese Remedies make mere men strong / old men young." According to Indianapolis newspapers, the Chinese medicine store operated at this site from August 1889 until March 1891. The white men from Denver who also operated this business in eight other cities were arrested for unlawful use of the title "doctor," mail fraud, and conspiracy to defraud. They hired untrained Chinese men to impersonate Gun Wa, a man who never existed. [The 1892 date written on the plastic sleeve is likely incorrect.] |
