Description |
Men pose by a barber pole in front of a small barber shop with a mansard roof. It is postmarked South Bend, Indiana, July 28, 1911. The message explains in part "This is a picture of my barber shop and the fellows ?un that I got it off. ... The one with the mark is my self." An ink mark is on the shirt of the man to the left. It is signed "Carrie Comer, 503 E. Sample St. South Bend." [Carrie Commer is a female listed in 1910s South Bend city directories.] Building permits indicate that T. H. [Tilghman] Rupel received a building permit for a $200 one story frame building at this address (South Bend Tribune, July 17, 1890, p. 2). Newspapers mention Stein Barber Shop at 503 East Sample Street in 1906. Hibberd's South Bend Directories list Jasper Mayo as a barber at this address in 1910 and William M. Baugher in 1912. The structure is not on this site in 2025. |
