Description |
Admirers greet celebrity George Montgomery (1916-2000) who waves from a convertible at the crowd near Obelisk Square. Children hand him portraits to autograph and a man takes a photograph with a camera. The view looks southwest from East North Street toward a building with a "Hotel English" sign. Montgomery, along with his wife Dinah Shore, were in Indianapolis for Indianapolis 500 race festivities in May 1961 and he stayed to make personal appearances in connection with his film "The Steel Claw." Although the English Hotel on Monument Circle was demolished in 1949, by June 1949 the "Hotel English" sign had been sold and placed atop the old Meridian Apartments (then a hotel) at the northwest corner of Meridian and Michigan Streets.
