Description |
The lodge also served as the Castleton Post Office. Signs next to the door are "Ice Cold Coca-Cola Sold Here" and "Ice Col Yancker Soda Sold Here." In front of the store is a bicycle and a gasoline pump. On the 1941 Indianapolis Sanborn Map #591, the building's address is 109 Main Street (formerly State) Street on lot 16 in Dr. Macy's Addition. By 1956 the road was Highway 100. An undated newspaper clipping with this photograph [attached] states that early owners include a Mr. Apple who sold it to O. M. Estes in 1888. In 1900 "Wash" Kesselring bought it and sold it a few years later to S. B. Beaver who sold it to George Herr, the man pictured in front. Herr operated a grocery there from 1913 to 1933 and his sons John and Ben continued and owned the building until selling to John Mathews of Mathews Grocery in 1946. The Independent Order of Red Men enlarged the structure [year not specified] and maintained lodge headquarters on the second floor. |
